JFC VAMPIRE DIARIES FANDOM.

GET YOUR VAMPIRE PHYSIOLOGY STRAIGHT.

IN TVD UNIVERSE VAMPIRES HAVE A HEART BEAT! AND BODY TEMPERATURE!

IN FACT ACCORDING TO DAMON: AS LONG AS I EAT A HEALTHY DIET MY BODY FUNCTIONS JUST LIKE YOURS. Season 1

ACCORDING TO CAROLINE: EATING REAL FOOD HELPS WITH THE CRAVINGS. Season 2

ACCORDING TO STEFAN: ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE KEEP THE CRAVINGS LOW AS WELL. Season 1

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO MAKE THIS RANT?

Perhaps I should uncapslock it and post it to a community?

I seriously can't read fics where the physiology is incorrect, that's like expecting Spock to bleed red, yo. It ain't gonna happen.

In your fandom, what do fic writers do to canon that makes you insane?

I remember reading a fascinating article once about how tweaking the vampire mythology is key to creating a good vampire universe (although making them sparkle was perhaps the dumbest one yet). It surprised me how often it's the going against the vampire grain (no, garlic does nothing, or no, their bodies have heartbeats) that really pull people in. So I can see why this is an essential part of the universe.

Just generally Not bothering to pay attention to canon is one of the most annoying things fanfic can do. I'm ok, even, if people come up with handwavey reasons why something has changed in their fic, but just not paying attention? Lazy!

It's so completely lazy. In the Buffyverse it was canon that vampires body temperature was ambient and it annoyed the shit out of me that people wrote about how insert vampire of your choice's body was cool to the touch or cold. In the middle of summer. In Southern California. Now, when they were setting their fics in Montana in the winter or Russia in the winter it was an interesting plot point! I could see how even the vampires would be annoyed at their own body temperature!

I'm such a canon stickler *anyway* that when something like this pops up, I think to myself:

how can this writer effectively write the characters if they don't even know how the universe works?

and I realize that's a bit precious and all, BUT!

Julie also said in an interview that with the exception of having babies, vampire bodies function the same exact way as human bodies (and that might change with the hybrids).

And yet in 75% of the fics I read, a vampire from the universe is described as having a non-beating heart and it's usually a shortcut for explaining that they are in facts monsters or at least non-human.

It's lazy. It's being ignorant of canon or at the very least a flagrant disregard for canon. Why bother with a particular Vampire fandom if you're not going to write it correctly?

My panties are in a bunch this morning, can you tell?

Also: I totally want to read about hybrid pregnancy fic now. TOTALLY.

I'm not familiar with TVD so I did not know that their vampires were different (thanks, TV Tropes -_-). Most of my own fic is unapologetically AU/AR so I probably drive the canon-faithful up a wall myself, but there are still certain elements of canon to which I stay faithful. I'm only active in one vampire-themed fandom but it would never even occur to me to go against the vampire physiology for that canon.

AU/AR is different though, it allows you to play with how things work and diverge from canon.

There are a lot of differences with the vampires in tVD. The bodily functions are one and the other that is most interesting to me is that they can't sense other vampires. People get that wrong all the time too and it makes me want to tear out my hair.

Much like when someone in SoA gives certain characters the back piece when they clearly don't have it. Points to Juice

I just proofed a book last week (meaning it had already been through a development editor and copyeditor who should have handled the factchecking) that had some outright wrong information. First problem was football related -- one of the characters plays Arena league but wants to go NFL and she knew nothing about either. Why would you not do your research if you don't know about something? It was so obvious to generic sports fans that her plot points made NO sense. She also had beans in her "Texas chili" which is just wrong wrong wrong, and had me channeling Stoney. And finally, there's a horse racing thing going on and she referenced Secretariat as being the last Triple Crown winner, which is also wrong (and easily checked on Wikipedia). So it's not just canon mistakes people make. *sigh*

I think the worst canon infringement for me is a multi-fandom issue -- crying boys. *g*

YIKES. I hope you kicked all those easily checkable and totally wrong things back up the chain.

Sometimes boys cry! They really do! Just not you know every 750 words

*g*

Boys totally cry. But yeah, not every 750 words. And definitely not every 250 words.

I pointed out the errors complete with links and logic. For me the book was very problematic in other ways, but it's not my job to comment on why I don't like the characters.

That's got to be extremely difficult. I can't imagine shutting my big fat mouth up. Clearly, you are a better -- or at least far more professional person -- that I will ever be.

If there's a moment when the character seems to behave differently than everywhere else in the book, that's okay. But it's the development ed who looks at that stuff. Once the book gets to me, someone has decided to buy it as it is. I just try to roll with it.
